Good piece, Rachel. We has a huge platform change at [blog provider I work for] a while back and it caused havoc - the new platform wasn't as good as the old one, and it should have never been implemented. But it was. Reactions were mixed but a surprising number of people stuck with it out of loyalty despite the negative changes, while others left quickly. What was interesting to me was that the reactions to this change which was undoubtedly a bad one (but don't tell my boss!) were much the same as what you have written above, even though those were to positive new features. Over time however everyone left and now I mainly look after tumble-weeds and Chinese spammers. I guess change is something you really have to get right. I like the survey idea, because the users are the key to any community and they're usually vocal and like to know they're being heard. Look forward to reading part two (especially as the bland uniformity of HCI "Gurus" makes me want to scream. Especially Jakob Neilsen. He is public enemy number one.)

People are such a pain - agreed. But iPods are brilliant solace, I'm hooked to mine constantly, although sadly I can't make the squishy in ear things stay in, booo! Anyway, I'm not going to comment on tripping up chappy as today I was walking to one side of the door and a pretty girl was walking to the other so I took a big stride to get their first and open it, only for it not to budge and her to stroll through the door next to it with a grin. Hmmm, I hate things about this country, but yet I still can't but love it. I love all it's ideosyncracies, it's foibles, and how despite it all we're still so very English about things. The things I hate about it (the government, political correct crap, the terrorists) are all temporal, they will change, where the things I like are permanent, so I think I'd stick here. But I think you should do what you want, if you like Spain enough to live and work there then why not!

He should be braver, I agree. But it's not so easy for us chaps, girls can be pretty intimidating sometimes. It's breaking the ice that is the hardest part, I think, because there is always the fear that you'll be judged and dismissed before you get to the stage of getting to know personalities. However, I think confidence is the main thing, I'm not sure it is so much looks, but the way people carry themselves confidence wise, if you have low self esteem its hard to talk to someone you don't know, and you can come across as nervous and mumbling, so he needs to stop thinking of himself poorly, hopefully having read your blog, that will help.
