coComment is a service to simplify of one of the most painful and ineffective processes on the Web: blog commenting. coComment is free, and will help you keep track of the comments and conversations you and others are making on blogs.

Then, if you have your own blog, coComment will allow you to display all the comments you have made on the web in a small and convenient box. This way your readers will know what conversations you have been taking part in, and by visiting your blog they will finally get a grasp of all the web-based conversations that are related to you - either the ones you start or those you contribute to.

1. Register, add the comment grabber browser extension or bookmarklet to your browser.
   
2. Go to a blog you appreciate and choose a conversation you're interested in. Then, as usual write your comment in the article comment field and click on the bookmarklet before submitting the comment. Test it on this blog
3. Come back to coComment.com to view your personal conversations page and follow what happens in the commentosphere.

YOUR CONVERSATIONS is the heart of coComment. It is the page where, in one single and convenient place, all the comments and conversations that concern you are displayed. By that we mean:

• Comments you made on others blogs, so you can remember where you commented and follow up
• Comments made by others on your blog(s)
• Comments made by people you trust.

The idea is that, in the near future, Your Conversations should become your start page when you want to track ALL the conversations that you are involved in.

First, what is a bookmarklet? A bookmarklet is a tiny piece of code that you add to your browser. It then can be used as a button that you push to perform certain actions. If you have a Ph. D. you can check the definition on Wikipedia

The bookmarklet is the mechanism we use to safely and discreetly collect your comments when you post them around the web. It works by simply sending the comment you made to our servers so we can add it to your discussion center.

Different types of integration are available:

A: share the comments you make on the web with the readers of your blog
If you want to share your latest comments with your readers we have a very simple solution we called the "Blog Box". Go to the configuration page and grab yours. Simply set a few options (like the color, the size, the number of comments shown), copy the code we give you to your blog, and you are done.

B: make your non-supported blog coComment compatible

C: integrate coComment into your blog so ALL comments are entered into Your Conversations page

Because the world is made of two kind of people: those using coComment, and those not using it. So when someone comments on your blog who is a coComment member, their comment will appear in your Your Conversations page. If they are not a member, their comment text can not be grabbed, so the comment will be added to your blog but NOT to Your Conversations page.

But we are working on that!

First, have a look if the blog system in question is actually supported by coComment. Because we have to extract quite a lot of information from commenting pages, we have to adjust our tools for each individual blog system.

But even if your blog system is supported, it might still fail to extract properly. Below, we try to list some of the common problems we encountered so far.

• If the comments have to be entered using a pop-up window (for example in certain blogger blogs), then coComment does not work. You'd have to activate coComment in the pop-up window for it to work, because otherwise it's sitting on the wrong page. Furthermore, in the pop-up page there is usually not enough information for us to extract all required information.
• On WordPress, the page title is used to extract the title of the relevant article and of the blog. The standard WordPress setup uses the '»' character for separation of title of blog and article. If on a blog, this is changed, then the extraction fails and the titles will end up as '(untitled)'.

Currently you can only delete your own comments. This can be accomplished by clicking on the 'delete' link on the comment in question. This will delete the complete comment from the system and it will be gone for all users. This will also remove the article or blog from the system if they would otherwise be empty.

We plan to add some hiding mechanism in the future that allows you to get rid of comments you don't want to see anymore in your conversation. This is not yet available, though.

coComment is currently in beta. So what does that mean? First, it means we are a typical  web 2.0" company. But beyond that, the beta label is here to remind you that we are still working on perfecting the existing functionalities and adding new features. The beta stage should last for another few months, and in the meantime we ask you to give us as much feedback as you can, and forgive us for the (hopefully infrequent) breakdowns in the service.
